Abstract
Symbolism is a figurative device used to embellish the text. A major part of mystical literature is of symbolic significance. The writers of Ruh al-Arwah and Kashfolasrar va Odatolabrar have used the form of anecdote in order to better explain the themes and further impress the readers. Symbolism has been aptly employed in these two multilayered and profound texts as it is a suitable medium to express mystical thoughts and materialize mystical teachings. The present study aims to analyze symbolism in the anecdotes of the above-mentioned works in an attempt to find the aim, origin, and the most important features of the employed symbols. The findings of the study show that based on their content, the symbols in these works are either mystical or religious; nonetheless, the mystical symbols are more frequent. As the message is of great significance in these anecdotes and thus, a very simple language and diction have been used, the symbols are also simple, one-dimensional, and concrete. Moreover, the plot of all these anecdotes revolve around such binary oppositions as lover/beloved and king/the masses. These binaries give rise to other oppositions in the mystical implications of the story and are of great importance in the formation of the story and the rendition of the subject matter.
