Abstract
Having adopted an analytic-descriptive approach, the present study aims at comparatively reading the dialectical relationship between the two elements of “imagination” and “individualism” in the poetry of Percy Bysshe Shelley and Forough Farokhzad. Imagination and individualism have been extremely highlighted in romantic poetry and were also frequently used in the works of the aforementioned poets. However, the results of the study revealed a dialectical relationship between these two elements which needs to be further clarified. Examining the dialectical relationship between the phenomena and concepts is a long-time practice which originates in philosophy and history, especially the history of thought. Dialectic is the discovery of relationships based on the internal conflicts, a trend which commenced with the philosophy of Socrates and Plato and culminated in Hegel’s thought. In the poetry of Shelley and Farokhzad, imagination stems from the inside of the society although it ultimately transforms into an individualist item. Nonetheless, the research project demonstrates that contrary to Shelley’s poetry in which individualism and imagination form only one dialectical relationship with no ultimate synthesis, in Farokhzad’s poetry, this relationship leads to a new synthesis which is the poetic making of a kind of Social Ego.
