Abstract
One of the controversial aspects of Kelidar, a novel by Mahmoud Doulatabadi, is its language that seems incompatible with the language of the novel, especially the language of the realist novel. This article uses Watt’s theories (1957) regarding the characteristics of the novel and the differences between this emerging literary genre in the eighteenth century and all the previous genres. In the light of his theories, the compatibility of Kelidar has been studied with six components, including the consideration of the details, the narrative, description, character, time, and place, in short, and the component of the language in more detail. This study indicates that the application of the literary role of language in Kelidar is so prominent that this work can be considered as a prime reflection of poetic language in Persian novel. Also, Kelidar is in the middle position in terms of its compatibility with the other six components of the novel and consequently, it can be said that the writer has not fully respected the pre-modern traditions of Persian scriptwriting, and not entirely follows the patterns of the novel and, in particular, the realist novel. Considering the time Doulatabadi finished writing the work (1362), the publication date of the first volume (1357), and the way the work was well received by the various sections of the Iranian society, stranded then between tradition and modernity, it could be concluded that the suspending structure of Kelidar was both a product and a representation of the Iranian society and so it can be interpreted in conjunction with realism.
