Abstract
Critical realism, derived from the school of Realism, which is an exclusively literary phenomenon of the golden age of Russia deals with the dominant social condition (status Quo), striving to change the status quo with a reformist perspective. Chekov in The Cherry Orchard, focusing on the fall of aristocracy and the emergence of bourgeoisie in Russia during the Nicola II era and employing a fictional encapsulation of the life of an aristocratic family, represents and analyses the present social realities in this period of Russian history. The present research aims to study and analyse the realistic characters of the play with emphasis on critical realism and highlight those issues in Russian society which were criticised by the author. Chekhov critisises the cold and dark atmosphere of the contemporary Russian society, harshly attacking the naïve aristocrats, passive intellectuals, static and resistant characters against change and mobility, identity crisis, lack of self-reliance and cultural absurdism. In so doing, he employs a critical and reformist approach, based on realities and realistic criteria, notably critical realism.
