Abstract
In the early twentieth century, Iranian writers turned to romanticism as a result of the influence of French romanticism and the favorable socio-cultural context of the period. Such an influence can be seen in the poetry of Nima Yushij and his followers as well as a few traditionalist poets. Sivash Kasrai is one of the best contemporary poets whose works frequently express the characteristics of the Romantic Movement. Having adopted an analytic-descriptive method, this essay examines social romanticism and revolutionary socialism in Kasrai’s poems. The Romantic Movement appeared in the 18th century in the wake of socio-political transformations, the decline of classicism, and the influence of enlightenment intellectuals. Initially, a Western movement, it later travelled across the world and was naturally subject to contextual changes. Romantic poetry is one of the important movements in Persian literature during the 1950s-60s, which was primarily social romanticism. The most salient characteristics of social romanticism in Kasrai’s poems include: idealist engagement with revolution and liberty, patriotism and nationalism, quest for a romantic hero, allegory of mother-child, love, hope and despair, obsession with death, mythmaking, and naturalism. The results of the study show that among these characteristics, mythmaking, naturalism, love, and death are the most salient in Kasrai’s romantic-socialist poems.
