Abstract Of the wide variety of issues raised in realistic novels of war is highlighting characters’ mental and psychological problems which can reveal the impact of war on the changes in the psychological states of character. The authors of war and resistance literature attempted to depict such changes in their own fictional characters. The main concern is the psychoanalytical analysis of characters in novels of Pol-e Moalagh (The Suspended Bridge) and Zamin-e Sokhteh (The Burnt Land) in the light of salient psychologists’ theories. Such issues as anxiety, fear, defense mechanism of repression, sameness, dislocation, reversal response and excitement-oriented responses were raised in this research study and answered accordingly. What effect has the imposed war had on the psychological states of the character? And what defense mechanism has the character adopted against such upheavals? The results of the research demonstrate that due to the ambiances of the novels and social, cultural and economic imbalance, the life of the character has suffered from fear and anxiety and to remove them, the character made use of such defense mechanisms as rejection and reversal response. In the realistic war novel of Zamin-e Sokhteh (The Burnt Land), war is the only cause of such changes and upheavals whereas in Pol-e Moalagh (Suspended Bridge) in addition to war, social issues and illness were the causes of such changes in the character.
