Abstract Surrealism was a kind of reaction of modern man to the loss of human identity in modern era. It was an escape from ghastly truth of science-oriented and rationalism which modern civilization brought to man in modern age. However, Islamic mysticism is a reformulation and a fundamentally epistemological change of the universe based on religion which requires a cognitive view with the aid of knowledge and intuition in recognizing constituents of principles and non-principles of religion which works based on the connection to the world of truth. Therefore, there is a fundamental difference between love-intuitive view of the mystic and materialistic view of surrealism. Writing of the present research has originated in the study and critique of those viewpoints which examined and investigated the Islamic-Iranian categories with elements of western surrealist school or strove to detect common points between the two. In recent years there have been numerous papers and articles in prestigious journals which focused on these two aspects about the proof of influence of Islamic mysticism on surrealism or the analysis of principles in ancient mystic texts. Surrealism possesses such tenets as dream, illusion, imagination, automatic writing, objective coincidence, madness and insanity, wonder and magic which are fundamentally different from those of Islamic mysticism. Those difference which rise from the realm of intuitive imagination, dignity, truth, reality, the essence of being and selflessness. The results of this research study was based on descriptive-analytical method and documentary studies, demonstrating that those mysticism-surrealism views which for the first time were introduced by Ali Ahmad Saeed (Adonis), the Syrian poet and were extended and propagated afterwards in Iran, are fundamentally and radically different.
