Abstract Communist literature as a branch of literature of commitment (engagement) in late 19th c. influenced all over Europe, most part of East and Russia. Communist ideology, brainchild of Marx’s and Angles’ communist ideas though, the “socialist democracy” in Russian Labour Party is deemed as the root cause of the universality of Communism and as a result transcending the Russian borders. The conflation of literature and ideology led to the emergence of two approaches: those movements which adopted Communism, short term and superficially though, and those other movements which took position against Communism and its commitments. In this line, socialist realism specifically in Russia can be considered as the most serious literary-sociological movement after the Renaissance. After that, even Surrealism by Andre Breton is engaged in communist thoughts and moves long way away from its own early manifest. Existentialism, as a philosophical literature and for considering man responsible in the world, included another form of Communism in literature. On the contrary, the Expressionist movement in west Germany harshly attacked the Communist policies and its idea of changing working man into a machine and opposes it with such ideas as anti-commitment, irresponsibility, and nihilism. As such, under the shadow of Communism, variety of opposing literary movements were created which severely discredited the artistic definition of “literary masterpiece”. The present research, utilising written and library sources and descriptive-analytical methodology, aims to find an answer for such a question: regarding the profound and bilateral relationship between sociological movements and literature, was Communism able to dominate literature?
