Abstract

Abstract
The gothic style, which first appeared in architecture in the 12th century, and expressed mystery and horror, became a fictional genre in the 18th century. In gothic stories, the author engages the reader by creating an atmosphere of horror and a detailed description of the scene. The characters in these stories suffer from mental disorders and psychosis, and have a strong desire to commit crime. In terms of setting, these stories take place in frightening remote and uninhabited spaces. This essay uses an analytic-descriptive method to examine the elements of gothicism in The Symphony of the Dead, which given its dark and gloomy ambiance and cruel psychotic characters, can be considered a gothic novel. Space in this novel is represented as gothic. For example, references to cemeteries and basements, which commonly connote a sense of fear and darkness, and snow, dry winter leaves, crows cawing, and wolves howling all create a gothic atmosphere. However, the most important gothic element in the novel is represented in the characters themselves who all suffer from loneliness while apparently living together. Deep down, they are lonely, which creates misunderstanding; this is expressed by means of highlighting their melancholic obsession with death, suicide, and murder-fratricide.
